The Department of Defence commenced the procurement process in August 2004 inviting the child care industry to submit innovative proposals to address the holistic child care needs of Defence. ABC Learning Centres was the successful tenderer and began to operate services in 18 Defence Child Care Centres on 1 July 2005.

Under the new contract ABC offered continuing employment to all staff in Defence Child Care Centres on equivalent conditions, ensuring continuity of care.

The agreement between the Department of Defence and ABC Corporate Care is for an initial 5 year period and may be extended for one or more additional periods up to a total of 5 years.

Since commencing the program, the number of Centres available to Defence families has doubled. The Corporate Child Care Centres will utilise the Defence Priority of Access Guidelines to ensure the Defence mobile families have priority of access to placement.
